Take advantage of new government rebates for home batteries

From 1 July 2025, Australians can get around 30% off the upfront cost of an eligible home battery through the Cheaper Home Batteries Program. The discount is applied by the retailer or installer on your invoice and is based on the battery’s usable capacity. It steps down over time until 2030.

If you live on the Sunshine Coast, this makes battery storage more accessible than ever. Add a battery to your existing solar, upgrade your current setup, or install a full solar and battery package. Sandy Electrical Solar will design, supply and install a premium system, then apply the eligible rebate at point of sale so you see the saving upfront.

How much is the discount worth

The program sets a maximum of $372 per usable kWh before fees. After typical admin and trading costs, the effective discount is commonly about $330 to $344 per usable kWh.
Examples for typical home batteries:

  • 13.5 kWh battery → roughly $4,455 to $4,644 off

  • 20 kWh battery → roughly $6,600 to $6,880 off
Actual savings vary with certificate market prices and fees at the time.

Who is eligible in Queensland

  • Homes, small businesses and community organisations with a battery installed on or after 1 July 2025.

  • Battery must be 5 kWh to 100 kWh nominal capacity. STCs are calculated on the first 50 kWh of usable capacity.

  • Battery must be installed with a new or existing solar PV system.

  • On‑grid systems must be VPP capable. Joining a VPP is optional, but the battery and inverter must be technically capable of it.

  • Products must be on the Clean Energy Council approved list and installation must be done by a Solar Accreditation Australia accredited battery installer.

  • The discount is normally applied upfront by the retailer or installer.

Note for Queensland: the state’s Battery Booster rebate is closed. For Sunshine Coast customers, the main support now is the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

Sunshine Coast specifics we take care of

  • Dynamic exports with Energex: new systems may be connected under dynamic export settings, which can allow up to 10 kW per phase when the grid can take it. We design your solar and battery with this in mind and configure compliant hardware.

  • Standards and safety: batteries are installed to Australian standards with correct placement, clear labelling and tidy cable management. Products are from premium brands with strong Australian support.

Is a home battery right for you

A battery is a smart investment if you want to:

  • Reduce or even eliminate power bills by storing daytime solar for night use.

  • Protect against blackouts on the Sunshine Coast with essential‑circuits backup.

  • Cut grid reliance and improve energy independence.

  • Prepare for EV charging and future electrification of your home.

Frequently asked questions

Can I claim the rebate if I already have solar
Yes. You can add a compliant battery to an existing solar system, provided it meets the program requirements and is installed on or after 1 July 2025.

How big can the battery be
Eligible systems are 5 kWh to 100 kWh nominal capacity. STCs are available on the first 50 kWh of usable capacity, which covers virtually all residential batteries.

Do I have to join a virtual power plant
No. The system must be VPP capable, however participation is optional. We will advise on pros and cons for your home.

How is the discount applied
The discount is provided upfront through your retailer or installer, not as a later cash claim. We handle the paperwork and certificate creation behind the scenes.
